CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand – England’s Laura Davies, 46, won the New Zealand Women’s Open for her 73rd worldwide title, shooting a 4-under 69 yesterday for a 2-stroke victory over three players.

LPGA – HSBC Champions tournament

SINGAPORE – Ai Miyazato won the HSBC Champions tournament to become the first LPGA Tour player in 44 years to sweep the first two events of a season, closing with 3-under 69 for a 2-stroke victory over Cristie Kerr.

Phoenix Open Final

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Hunter Mahan came from 4 strokes behind to beat Rickie Fowler by a shot in a 1-2 finish by former Oklahoma State players at the Phoenix Open yesterday.
The 27-year-old Mahan had an eagle and a pair of birdies in a late four-hole span to finish at 16-under 268 for his second PGA Tour victory. Mahan closed with consecutive 6-under 65s to finish at 16 under at the TPC Scottsdale.
Fowler, just 21 and a tour rookie, had a final-round 68 for the second runner-up finish of his young career.

Phoenix Open, Round One

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. Colombian Camilo Villegas holds a one-stroke lead after Thursday’s opening round of the Phoenix Open . The 28-year-old, who reached the semifinals of the WGC-Accenture Match Play last week, tied the tournament first-round record with a 9-under-par 62 to take a one-shot lead over former Florida teammate Matt Every. A group of five players; Justin Rose, Mark Wilson, Ryuji Imada, Rickie Fowler and Pat Perez are tied for third place three shots off the pace.

Beckman wins Mayakoba Golf Classic

February 21, 2010 PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico (AP) Cameron Beckman won the Mayakoba Golf Classic for his third PGA Tour title, closing with a 3-under 67 on Sunday for a two-stroke victory over third-round leader Joe Durant and Brian Stuard.

The 40-year-old Beckman, three strokes behind Durant at the start of play Sunday, finished at 15-under 269 on the Mayakoba Resort’s El Camaleon course. Beckman also won the 2001 Southern Farm Bureau Classic and 2008 Frys.com Open.

Laird wins first PGA Tour event

Scotland’s Martin Laird won the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open at Las Vegas for his first PGA Tour title, beating George McNeill with a birdie on the third hole of a playoff.

Laird closed with a three-under-par 68 to match McNeill (67) and former Nevada Las Vegas player Chad Campbell (69) at 19-under 265. Campbell was eliminated on the second extra hole.

Phil Mickelson wins Tour Championship; Woods claims FedEx Cup and $10 million

ATLANTA, GEORGIA — Phil Mickelson surged to victory in the Tour Championship Sunday as Tiger Woods collected the $10-million bonus as the FedEx Cup play-off series winner. Mickelson carded a five-under par 65 Sunday for a nine-under winning total of 271. Woods closed with a 70 that put him second behind Mickelson on 274, and his runner-up finish was enough to deliver the FedEx Cup title after he came into the tournament atop the points standings.
Mickelson, who regained the world number two ranking with the victory, earned a $3-million FedEx Cup bonus — in addition to his $1.35-million tournament winner’s prize — as the second-placed finisher in the points.

Choi wins 1st LPGA title at Samsung

South Korea’s Na Yeon Choi won her maiden LPGA title in the Samsung World Championship at Torrey Pines on Sunday evening. Choi needed to hole a birdie on the last to resist the challenge of Japan’s Ai Miyazato – having built up and then squandered a seven-shot lead. A one-under-par round of 71 eventually proved just enough, Choi finishing on 16 under for the championship.

Tiger Woods wins BMW Championship

Tiger Woods coasted to an eight-shot victory at the BMW Championship on Sunday, to capture his sixth title of the season. Woods closed with a three-under 68 to win for a fifth time at Cog Hill.
American Jim Furyk returned a bogey free five-under 66 to finish second alongside PGA Tour rookie Leishman (69) at 11-under 273. Sean O’Hair (66) was alone in fourth, one shot further back at 10-under followed by fellow American Zach Johnson (68) at eight-under. Ire¬land’s Padraig Harrington (73) and Spain’s Sergio Garcia (71) finished in a tie for sixth on six-under 278.
It was Woods’ 71st PGA Tour title leaving him just two short of tying Jack Nicklaus for second on the all-time list.

Stricker Wins Deutsche Bank Championship on Labor Day

Steve Stricker birdies last 2 holes to win Deutsche Bank Championship on Monday, moving past Tiger Woods to the top of the FedEx Cup standings. Stricker has a 909-point lead over Woods in the FedEx Cup with two tournaments remaining. The victory was his third of the year, and moved Stricker to a career-high No. 2 in the world ranking.
