US wins 4th straight Presidents Cup

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA (AP) NOV 20, 2011 5:09 AM ET

The Americans returned Down Under and wound up on top in the Presidents Cup.

Jim Furyk became the fourth player to win all five of his matches, and the bottom half of the lineup was strong enough to give the Americans their fourth straight win in this lopsided series.

Perhaps it was only fitting that Tiger Woods clinched the cup for the second straight time.

U.S. captain Fred Couples was criticized for using a pick on Woods, who had been out with an injury most of the summer and had not won since his personal life crumbled two years ago. Woods played well all week, even if he didn’t always get rewarded with a point. In his singles match Sunday against Aaron Baddeley, he was never seriously challenged.

Woods closed out Baddeley, 4 and 3, and the celebration was on.

Sorenstam picked to receive Bob Jones Award, USGA’s highest honor

FAR HILLS, N.J. — Annika Sorenstam, universally regarded as one of the most dominant players in the history of women’s golf, has been selected as the recipient of the U.S. Golf Association’s 2012 Bob Jones Award, USGA officials have announced. The award will be presented Feb. 4, 2012, at the USGA’s Annual Meeting in Houston.

The USGA’s highest honor has been presented annually since 1955 in recognition of distinguished sportsmanship in golf. The award seeks to recognize a person who emulates Jones’ spirit, his personal qualities and his attitude toward the game and its players.

“Annika has consistently exhibited the specific character trait – distinguished sportsmanship – that the Bob Jones Award was established to recognize, and has done so while achieving a level of success that few have equaled,” said USGA President Jim Hyler. “It is not only the number of tournaments that she won during her incredible career, but the way she conducted herself, always gracious in victory and defeat, always respectful of her opponents and the game itself.”

Tiger Woods will skip British Open

In an announcement on his website Tuesday that came as no surprise, Tiger Woods said he would not play in the British Open next week because his injuries to his left leg have not fully healed.
“Unfortunately, I’ve been advised that I should not play in the British Open,” Woods said. “As I stated at the AT&T National, I am only going to come back when I’m 100 percent ready. I do not want to risk further injury. That’s different for me, but I’m being smarter this time.
“I’m very disappointed and want to express my regrets to the British Open fans.”

Woods injured, blames shot in Masters

Apr 26, 2011 CHARLOTTE, N.C.
Tiger Woods has a minor injury to his left knee and Achilles’ tendon that will keep him out of the Wells Fargo Championship next week, raising more questions that his health might be the biggest obstacle in his chase of Jack Nicklaus’ record.
Woods said on his website Tuesday that he hurt himself hitting a shot during the third round of the Masters. It’s the fourth time he has missed a tournament because of his left knee. Woods did not say when he might return, but he hopes to be back in a few weeks.
Woods described this injury as minor – a mild sprain of his medial collateral ligament in the left knee, along with a mild strain to his left Achilles. Woods said the injury occurred when he had to squat to play a shot from under the Eisenhower tree left of the 17th fairway. His left foot got caught in the pine straw as the momentum of the swing carried him backward. Woods hit into a front bunker and saved par on his way to a 74, then shot 31 on the front nine Sunday to tie for the lead. He wound up tied for fourth, and he appeared to be limping coming to the 18th green.

Watney rallies to win Doral

DORAL, Fla. (AP) Nick Watney has won the Cadillac Championship at Doral with two big par putts on the back nine and a birdie at the end that left no doubt.

Watney rallied from a two-shot deficit Sunday against Dustin Johnson and closed with a 5-under 67 to win this World Golf Championship, the third victory of his career and by far the biggest.

It was the second time he was in a tense duel at Doral. Watney finished one shot behind Phil Mickelson two years ago. This time, Watney relied on his putter to come out the winner.

Johnson fell behind with a bogey on the 16th and couldn’t catch up, closing with a 71.

Tiger Woods closed with a 66, matching his best score of the year, and had his first top 10 in official PGA Tour events in nine months.
